We raised over a thousand dollars to support local families with children fighting cancer! As soon as we hear back from Oakley on their totals, we’ll let you know if I get pied in the face. If you are still not connected to Class Dojo and need tech support, please bring your phone and come by the school next week between 7:15-8:15 in the media center. September is Childhood Cancer Awareness month. In honor of two amazing cancer survivors at our school, we will be hosting a Kidz in Lids hat day to benefit Children’s Cancer Partners of the Carolinas on Friday. Please send in a donation of any amount and wear a hat on Friday. Parents, please check your child’’s backpack nightly. There is important information in their communication folder. Also, please ensure that there are no items that are unsafe on the bus such as scissors or toy weapons. Please sign up as a volunteer through the Buncombe County Schools website; registering now will make sure you are ready to help with field trips, class parties, and other exciting events this school year! Currently, we have a need for book fair volunteers the week of September 26th-30th. Book fair hours are 7-2, with a special need for volunteers from 7-8:30 am. Good afternoon, Sand Hill-Venable families! This is Dr. Stolte with our weekly message. There is no school Monday due to the Labor Day holiday. Enjoy your long weekend! For student safety, parents are not allowed in the school building at dismissal unless they have a previously-scheduled meeting. We recommend using the car rider line. If you prefer to park and greet your child outside, please make sure you see Mr. V so that he can announce your child’s name over the intercom. Any students who need to be picked up early for an appointment need to be signed out before 2 pm. Also, if your child is a car rider, please do not get out of the car in the car rider line. Practice buckling independently with your child, or pull over in a visitor spot after pickup to help them buckle. We also encourage kindergarten parents to begin letting their children walk into school by themselves this week; staff are throughout the building to ensure that they get safely to class. Also please remember that any transportation changes must be received in writing by 2 pm. Good afternoon and happy first week of school, Sand Hill-Venable families! This is Dr. Stolte, your assistant principal, with our weekly message. Tomorrow is the first day of school for all 1st-4th grade students and kindergartners with last names A-M! Arrival is from 7:15-7:45, and dismissal is at 2:30. When dropping off or picking up your student, enter through the entrance on Apac Dr., near Buncombe County Sports Park (see this map). For the safety of our students, do NOT park or drop off students along the road, at the church, or at the entrance to the bus lot. We will have many staff members present to greet your child and help them find their class. Kindergarten parents may park in visitor’s spaces and walk their child to class for the first two weeks only. If your child rides a bus, please remember that bus times are approximate and will vary during the first few weeks of school. Please arrive at your stop at least 10 minutes early and be patient if the bus is running late. Kindergarteners with last names N-Z will come for their first day on Tuesday, and all kindergarten students will begin attending together on Wednesday. Please join Class Dojo as soon as possible, as it is our primary mode of communication between teachers and parents. You should have received an invitation at Meet the Teacher or will get one in your student’s folder on Monday. Also, please return Free and Reduced Price lunch forms and PTO surveys as soon as possible so that we can best use our resources to meet student needs. Your child’s teacher will be calling you early this week to introduce themselves. Please contact us if you have not heard from them by Thursday morning. We’d like to invite everyone to our Meet the Teacher night on Thursday, August 25th from 4-6 pm. School supply lists are available on our school website under “Academics” or teacherlists.com. If your child is planning to ride the bus this year and has not ridden the bus previously or signed up for a bus at kindergarten registration, please call the office to place them on a bus route. Bus times will be provided when you talk to your child’s teacher and at our Meet the Teacher event. If your child will be a car rider, please remember to use our school entrance on Apac Drive, at the Buncombe County Sports Park (see this map). North Windy Ridge Intermediate (NWRI) students took a trip to Biltmore Estate to enjoy the scenery and learn about local history. The students had a busy day touring the large facilities, the farm and the home, and learning about horticulture, architecture, and local history. They got to learn about horse drawn carriages, metalworking, looms and weaving, and see the estate and a variety of farm animals. “It’s history in our backyard,” said NWRI Principal Brent Wise. “Every student should see it at some point in their lives. It’s all about making connections with our local history.” The school’s first trip to Biltmore, the NWRI PTO raised the funds for this trip that the students won’t soon forget.
