Meet the Teacher

Mr. McKernan

Welcome to the fourth grade! My name is Mr. McKernan and I am excited for the new school year! I joined the staff at Sand Hill-Venable in 2012. I run a structured classroom community where kids are able to be themselves, have fun, and learn. I believe that there is no substitute for hard work. I further believe that manners matter when building a safe learning environment. I work hard and I expect the kids that I teach to do the same. If you are not modeling it you are not teaching it. Our classroom will move! I incorporate breathing exercises and opportunities to move in the classroom. I also run a yoga club at Sand Hill-Venable. I believe kids grow best outside. I can often be found at recess supervising the athletic fields as well as joining in on the games. I have high expectations for myself as well as my students. Parents are welcome in my classroom environment. Please contact me if you are interested in being a reading buddy, math fact buddy or an at home helper.

About me:

I grew up in Philadelphia, attended Indiana University of PA and graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Training and Development (Organizational Communications). I made a career in the banking sector for 13 years. I worked in roles varying from Project Management, Commercial Sales and Quality Assurance. I achieved my K-6 teaching licensure from UNCA in 2012. My sister has served as an elementary school teacher for 25 years and I have an aunt who has served as an elementary school teacher for over 30 years. I guess teaching is in my blood. This is my vocation and the kids are at the forefront of all of my efforts.
