In reading, we are working on metacognition (thinking about our thinking). We are using thinking stems to share out thinking about what we are reading. Students are learning that REAL Reading is Thinking! Please work with your child during their nightly reading to encourage thinking. We will continue all year to leave tracks of thinking. We are learning about main ideas in fiction texts so students will be able to recount stories, including fables, folktales, and myths from diverse cultures; determine the central message, lesson, or moral and explain how it is conveyed through key details in the text. (RL 3.2)
Our math unit focuses on strategies for adding and subtracting 3 digit numbers. We are using our knowledge of place value to decompose numbers. We are learning that it is important to read directions and word problems carefully to make sure we complete all required steps for solving a problem. Students are also learning to round numbers to make reasonable estimates.
We are exploring students' ideas about science and thinking about what it means to be a scientist.
We are writing personal narratives. Students have developed several lists to use as idea starters for writing stories from their lives. We are learning about strong leads and using vivid details to paint a picture in the reader's mind.
